Wherever you work, or whenever you are speaking to lay people (even other healthcare folks), speak in plain simple English.

Use whole words instead of acronyms but avoid jargon and medical terminology as much as possible. If you do need to use jargon, at least explain what it means.

Also consider to whom you are speaking and how your words, including your questions, may be interpreted.

If you speak and people don’t understand what you say, you may as well remain silent. Once you lose your ability to communicate clearly, effectively, and compassionately, you lose your effectiveness as a care provider.

Don’t forget to pause and prioritize your own well-being. Even amidst a busy day, self-care is a powerful tool to recharge and reset. Steal moments for deep breaths, a quick stretch, or a soothing cup of tea. Remember: you deserve moments of care amidst the hustle.

Learn to disengage from work, even for short periods of time. No matter where you work or what you do, it’s imperative to take periodic breaks for recovery and renewal, even if it’s only for five minutes at a time.  Disengaging for even a few moments is the pause that refreshes.
